My child had a wonderful and engaging experience in the UPLINK program. We participated in several community cleanup efforts with other eager parents and volunteers.

Better than some

Its okay, but I think id rather go to Ewa Makai Middle school. NO OFFENSE.

My instructions to my children as they entered Ilima Intermediate was to just survive the next two years because Campbell High would make up for it. By my second child in, I realized how right I was. Okay, this is a public school...I get it. That doesn't mean the staff/administrators can disrespect the student body or their parents. My handful of disappointing experiences has soured my resolve to practice what I preach and just "survive." Firstly, I've learned that when I have to go into the office I have to deal with that awkward silence while everyone pretends they don't see me, and they all believe their "invisible" pills are working! Secondly, last year my 7th grader had cause to go to the health room as he was complaining of dizziness. The health aide's brilliant response was to send him on his merry way! She neither recorded the complaint, nor did she call me. She believed that his answer of, "I had a banana," to her question of, "did you have anything for breakfast?" was sufficient to determine that he was well enough to be walking around campus. No, "how long have you been feeling like this?" No, "does this happen to you often?" No, "do you typically have a banana for breakfast?" Nothing. Had she cared enough to care enough, she would have been told that this has not happened to him before. She told him to go to the cafeteria and eat something. Period. Effectively kicked out of the health room unrecorded, my son went straight to the office to call me. I called his doctor who rightfully treated this as a potentially serious situation and fit us into his afternoon schedule. In speaking with principal Lee, I was initially surprised, (though not anymore) to realize that even without speaking to the health aide, he believed that her action was perfectly appropriate. When I insisted that you, "never take dizziness lightly, you don't send him out walking around campus" he responded (arrogantly I felt), "I am not a doctor." Clearly. Since then I have insisted that each and every time my child enters that health room, someone call me immediately. I will determine whether to send him away. I have no choice but to question my children's safety there. It is clear that my feelings and opinions as a parent, are secondary to the defense of the actions of the staff/teachers/administrators. Finally, the other day my son was instructed to call me from class to let me know he had not completed an assignment. Before we hung up his teacher came on the line and repeated what he said. I asked her what the assignment was and she rudely told me my son had to explain, at which time she handed him the phone to my cries of, "wait, wait, hello? hello?" Three times my son told her that I wanted to speak with her, each time she refused. I immediately called principal Lee, I immediately felt a wave of deja vu. Once again it was me against "them." Without speaking with the teacher, he defended her actions. Since I had him on the phone, I told him about my son's recent project. My child's grade had gone from an "A" to an "F" due to this project. A project which I saw him working on for at least a few days. He and I discussed it and I was proud of him for caring about neatness and making sure he used the right colors to represent the lava flow, etc. So for that project, for his time and effort, for his self-pride, he got a big fat "F." Not wanting to disappoint me and worried that I might be upset with him, he secretly redid it. But because he threw out the rubric with the "F" project, she wouldn't even look at the second attempt! So two projects, two "F's." Way to inspire, teacher! I've asked for a face to face regarding this, as well as her avoiding me on the phone. I'm told that Wednesdays aren't good as that's when they have their meetings, and today and tomorrow may be out. Okay... So I'll have to find a way to fit it in next week, Thanksgiving week, my busiest week of the year. Because it's important as well as a priority. For my son and me anyway.

The student body, faculty, staff and our Ewa Beach ohana stand proud to be members of this great school community of Ilima Intermediate. We live and breathe perseverance and teamwork. Our collective efforts shine through in our words, actions and growth mindset. As one team, we welcome challenges, believe our abilities will continue to grow, make mistakes and value the lessons we learn from them. #IlimaWay
